Harry Maguire Dethroned as Man United Captaincy Stripped

Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire, has revealed that he has officially been stripped of his captaincy by manager, Erik ten Hag.

“After discussions with the manager today he has informed me he is changing captain,” the 30-year-old footballer tweeted on Sunday, 16 July, before adding: “He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.”

The club confirmed the decision via a statement on their official website on the same day, saying: “Everyone at Manchester United thanks Harry for his contribution as captain over the past three-and-a-half years.”

For now, it seems they’ll be keeping mum on Maguire’s replacement, as they finished the press release with: “The manager will announce the new captain in due course, after he has informed the players.”

However, all is not lost for the England defender as several other clubs have expressed their interest in him, with West Ham United believed to be investigating a potential loan option. While his contract at Old Trafford runs until 2025, Ten Hag reportedly hopes to sell Maguire to increase the club’s signing budget.

The trick will be to find a team that can pay Maguire’s considerable salary.
